In a way, the Reencle’s the most ideal example of a circular economy… because you’re technically using food to grow more food. Designed to effectively compost and break down food waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer, the Reencle is a compact, quiet, odor-free kitchen appliance that puts your food waste to good use; although that shouldn’t give you an excuse to waste more food!

Food waste is a burgeoning problem in USA, with roughly 30-40% of the food supply being thrown in the trash (that’s about 1 pound per person per day, amounting to over 200 billion tonnes in America alone)… now sure, most of that waste is created in the supply chain or as rejected food, but a significant chunk of that large amount comes from households in the form of food-prep waste, bones/peels, discarded leftovers, or expired products. Hoping to put that waste into good use so it doesn’t end up in a landfill creating tonnes of CO2 and Methane as it decomposes, the Reencle is an at-home solution that helps efficiently break down food in a way that turns it into a rich compost that benefits the planet instead of harming it. Microorganisms inside the Reencle’s inner chamber break the food down in roughly 24 hours, creating a compost that can be used in gardens, backyards, indoor planters, or even be disposed of, so it doesn’t harm the environment.

Roughly the size of a trash bin, Reencle comes with an automatic opening lid (powered by a foot sensor that pops open the lid when you’re standing nearby) and a control panel that lets you operate the device. Once you’ve put your waste in, simply pour in Reencle’s packet of organic additives (the microcultures exist inside this) along with some water to wake up and hydrate the microorganisms, and the composting machine gets to work.

A mechanical churning system inside the Reencle’s inner chamber mixes, rotates, aerates, and compacts the food waste and organic additives, reducing the volume of waste in just an hour through vigorous mixing. The organic cultures feed on the food, releasing odors and gases that get trapped inside the Reencle. Any emissions are passed through the device’s multi-tiered filter system, and the odor molecules are trapped within an activated carbon layer inside the filter system. All you’re left with is trace amounts of water vapor and clean air that make their way out of the device.

Organisms devour your food waste in under 24 hours.

Ultimately, Reencle gives you a rich compost mix that you can use in your own gardens along with soil in a 1:4 ratio (1 part compost to 4 parts soil). The compost can be used, stored for later, or even disposed of, helping you get rid of food without adding to the food waste problem. Piloted in Korea, the Reencle’s seen over 45,000 units sold in the country alone, and hopes to make its way to USA to tackle the escalating food waste problem occurring within domestic settings. The device requires barely any space, needs no setting up or plumbing, and can be kept in the kitchen, where its odor-proof design ensures undesired aromas never enter your home. Each Reencle comes with a 1-year warranty, and even ships with its own food scoop for contact-free use, so you don’t have to touch anything at all or wash/sanitize your hands after!
